Hi! I'm Whitney

the founder of Undiscovered Sunsets

Undiscovered Sunsets was a long time in the making, even if I myself didn’t realize it.  During my time at the University of Northern Iowa, I studied abroad in New Zealand.  This decision changed my future path in a remarkable way.  Upon

graduating, with my newfound love of foreign languages in my back pocket, I bought a one-way ticket to France.  I lived with a French family, studied with classmates from Turkey, China, Russia, Germany, Italy, and everywhere in between.  French was our only common language, broken as it was.

This experience fueled my curiosity for the world.  I began teaching English as a foreign language, which enabled me to share my love of languages while also traveling the world.  This job quickly took me to China, where English teachers were in high demand.  Never did I expect that within three years, I would be working in a 5-star hotel, speaking Mandarin throughout most of my day.

In total, I lived abroad for 7 years.  Between studying, teaching English, and eventually working as the Director of Operational Excellence in a 5-star hotel in Shanghai, I took every opportunity to travel.  Sometimes I met up with friends or family in different countries, other times I went solo.

When Undiscovered Sunsets began to take shape, I considered it the perfect mélange of my personal experience traveling the world and my professional experience working in the hospitality industry.  And now, less than four years since starting on this journey, our team is growing.

When I travel, it's the food, the language, and the history that explains so much of why things are the way they are that excites me most. I will often seek out local hotels that bring a destination to life and am known to encourage you to slow down in order to fully absorb all of these new experiences. I put my heart and soul into Undiscovered Sunsets as a travel planning service, and I look forward to designing your next adventure!

At Undiscovered Sunsets...

We travel, as often as possible. We strap on our backpacks to see what we can accomplish on a budget.  We scout out the boutique hotels and stay in AirBNBs to better understand the advantages and disadvantages of this style of travel.  And sometimes, we jump on fluffy beds and have pillow fights in 5-star, luxurious hotels so that we can tell you exactly when it’s worth your hard-earned $$$ to splurge and enjoy, because, you deserve it.

We build relationships in the travel industry. We want the best, most up-to-date information for you at all times. When you want to plan a trip to a country we’ve never been to, we work together with destination specialists who are on the ground, based in that country. When you’re checking-in to celebrate your anniversary, a special achievement, or maybe, it’s a staycation, just because, we want the hotel team to know exactly why you’re there and how they can make your stay even more memorable.

We cultivate a community of like-minded travelers. Travel is insanely awesome. And it’s usually better when shared with other, super-cool people. Sometimes, you’re all alone with that crazy thing you want to do or that crazy place you want to go.  Not with our community! Tell us HERE about that crazy thing you want to do or that crazy place you’d like to go, and we’ll find a group of people to do it with you so that you don’t have to do it alone.

We believe in honesty, always. If you tell us that you’d like to combine a 2-week trip to both the Galapagos and Peru, we’ll tell you honestly (and politely) why we don’t think that’s the best way. If you ask us about a country we’ve visited, a cruise we’ve been on, or a hotel we’ve stayed in, we’ll let you know honestly if we think it’s the best way for you, personally, to spend those hard-earned vacation funds. If challenges arise, we’ll let you know, we’ll take full responsibility, and we’ll do everything in our power to make it right.

Unique and personal. It’s our specialty. Your vacation should be all about you. Is this trip to relax or to dive into a new culture and experience something new. Are you planning to have a cocktail in one hand, at all times, or can you not fit those high heels in your bag because your hiking shoes are taking up too much room? Are you taking your kids on an adventure to open their eyes to the wonders of the world, or are you hoping to not see them for seven days straight? We’ll spend a lot of time getting to know you and what you have in mind for each individual trip because, you are unique, and your vacations should be also.

Our mission is to lead the way in exploring new places, interacting with new people, and engaging with new cultures so that we may instigate more inclusivity, more open-mindedness, more empathy, and more respect for all.
